With the eyes of the world on Seoul for what was essentially South Korea’s coming-out party, the opening ceremony got off to an unfortunate start. Releasing a flock of doves into the stadium might have seemed like a good idea on paper, but the reality was actually pretty gruesome: as the cauldron was lit, a host of birds were burned to a crisp in front of the entire planet.
